Introduction
While reaching the age of 18 is a core baseline, qualifying for a Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) plan involves more than just hitting a birthday. BNPL services allow consumers to break down payments into affordable installments, but the approval process and the amount you are allowed to spend once you are approved highly depend on identity verification, account history, and other internal risk evaluations.
This guide compares three major Singapore providers: Atome, Grab PayLater, and SPayLater. Passing basic criteria never guarantees automatic access. Work Permit holders can apply if they hold a valid Foreign Identification Number (FIN) and local bank details, though provider requirements vary.
Remember, even interest-free BNPL plans are financial commitments.
What Are the Common BNPL Eligibility Requirements?
Most BNPL providers in Singapore start with similar baseline criteria. You typically need to be at least 18 years old, have a Singapore mobile number or Singapore-based account, a valid email address, and identity verification using an NRIC or FIN.
Providers also require a supported debit or credit card for automatic payments and a platform account in good standing. Final approval depends on each provider’s internal eligibility or creditworthiness assessment, so meeting the basics does not guarantee access.
Special Term: The Singapore BNPL Code of Conduct
Accredited providers follow the Singapore FinTech Association’s BNPL Code of Conduct. Key safeguards include age verification, collection of identifying details such as name, birth date, NRIC/FIN, email and mobile number, and a general S$2,000 outstanding payment cap per provider unless further credit assessment is done.
Providers should also offer hardship assistance and pause new BNPL transactions for customers in financial difficulty.
Can Work Permit Holders Apply for BNPL?
Holding a Work Permit does not guarantee approval for Buy Now, Pay Later plans, but eligibility is possible under specific conditions.
- Atome: Explicitly accepts a valid Foreign Identification Number (FIN) during registration. Work Permit holders with a valid FIN, active local mobile number, and accepted card can submit an application.
- SPayLater: Supports identity verification via Singpass MyInfo. Work Permit holders who possess an active FIN and can successfully complete Singpass verification may qualify to apply.
- Grab PayLater: Limits access to selected users. Because public eligibility guidelines do not explicitly confirm coverage for all Work Permit categories, check if “PayLater” appears under the Finance tab in your Grab app.
Note: While a valid FIN fulfills basic identity requirements, providers still weigh spending history, automated verification results, and internal credit criteria before granting access.

Atome: Eligibility and How to Apply

To qualify for Atome, you must be at least 18 and have a Singapore +65 mobile number. You will also need to submit your full name that appears on the identification card, your NRIC or FIN, date of birth, email address and a credit/debit card from a bank. When it comes to purchases, they usually have to be S$1.50 or more.
Application steps:
- Download the Atome app.
- Register with your mobile number.
- Tap Scan on the home page to start first-time verification.
- Submit your personal details via MyInfo or manually.
- Add a valid credit or debit card.
- Shop at participating merchants once registration is complete.
What happens if you default?
- Atome sends a reminder before the payment date.
- If automatic deduction fails, your account may be suspended or frozen.
- Late fees are S$15 for orders under S$1,000, or S$30 for orders above S$1,000.
- You must clear the amount and fee before the account is restored.
- Long-overdue payments may lead to permanent suspension.
Grab PayLater: Eligibility and How to Apply

Grab PayLater is available only to selected users aged 18 and above. The most reliable sign you’re eligible is seeing PayLater in your Grab app; meeting basic conditions does not guarantee activation or a specific limit. Older GrabRewards-tier or transaction-history pages may no longer reflect current rules.
Application steps:
- Open the Grab app.
- Tap Finance.
- Select PayLater.
- Complete activation and identity verification as prompted.
- Link a supported debit or credit card for automatic deductions.
- Review your available amount, billing date, and plan options before accepting.
Plan types:
- PayLater Postpaid: eligible purchases are combined into one later bill.
- PayLater Installments: a purchase is split into fixed monthly payments.
- Standard Postpaid and Pay-in-4 have no fees.
- Selected users may get Pay-in-8 or Pay-in-12, which charge 0.75% of the transaction amount per installment.
You can make multiple purchases as long as you stay within your available PayLater amount.
If you default:
- Grab charges a S$15 administrative fee per missed payment.
- Late-fee caps: Pay-in-4 S$45, Pay-in-8 S$105, Pay-in-12 S$165.
- Access to PayLater may be restricted until you settle the amount due.
- Grab may try another linked card before applying the late-payment charge.

SPayLater: Eligibility and How to Apply

SPayLater is available to users above 18. Shopee’s current help page states that accounts created before 23 October 2024 are eligible to apply, but approval is still required. Identity verification uses Singpass MyInfo and facial recognition, and each NRIC or FIN can be linked to only one Shopee account.
You must also connect at least one debit or credit card for automatic repayment. Since the account-date rule may change, check whether SPayLater appears under the Me tab.
Application steps:
- Open Shopee and go to Me.
- Tap SPayLater, then Activate Now.
- Choose a verification method and enter the code.
- Log in to Singpass MyInfo and authorise retrieval of your personal details.
- Confirm your email address and mobile number.
- Accept the terms and complete facial verification.
- Link a debit or credit card for automatic repayment.
How It Works
SPayLater is provided by Monee (Credit) Singapore Private Limited, not directly by sellers. It offers 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-month payment options. Monthly interest may apply at checkout, though selected merchants may offer 0% interest. Repayment starts after the order has been received, and your total balance is set and periodically reviewed by the provider.
If you default:
- A S$5 late charge applies for each month a bill remains overdue.
- SPayLater will be suspended, preventing further SPayLater purchases.
- Prolonged non-payment may result in additional restrictions on your SPayLater or Shopee account.

Final Words
Age and a valid ID are only the starting points. Work Permit holders with a FIN may be able to apply for Atome or SPayLater, while Grab eligibility is best checked directly in the app. Approval, payment options and spending amounts remain provider-specific. Before activating a plan, compare the full repayment amount, due dates and late-payment consequences—not just the advertised monthly instalment.
