Secondhand MacBooks: Most Sought-After Models & How to Value Them

Table of Contents

Although a brand-new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro look amazing, their price can be a bit painful. With the massive advancements Apple has made in the chip, even a used Mac from a few years ago can often beat out a new mid-range PC in terms of speed.

The problem? The secondhand market is a minefield of overpriced relics, misleading “Core i7” listings, and hidden wear. The good news: you don’t need the latest generation. By hunting down specific sweet-spot models and using a strict diagnostic checklist, you can score a machine that feels brand new—at up to 60% off retail.

Not All Models Are a Good Choice: Why Intel MacBook’s Are a Dead End?

Buying an Intel MacBook in today’s market is a losing bet. Apple is quickly discontinuing providing macOS support for any Intel machines (especially 2019 or earlier), meaning there will no longer be security or feature updates. The difference in performance between an M1 chip (even at its lowest specs) and the first-generation Core i7 and i9 at their highest specs is staggering, including how much cooler an M1 runs, how much longer it lasts on battery, and how fast it is overall.

Therefore, the secondhand market is full of Intel units being sold by smart consumers who have moved over to M1. Unless you spot one under S$150 purely for emergency web browsing, steer entirely clear, your hard-earned money deserves Apple Silicon.

How to Check your MacBook Resale Value

You can determine a MacBook resale value (if you are asking or paying the right price) in your local area by paying attention to three key configuration upgrades:

RAM Tax (8G vs 16G): Apple Silicon uses memory efficiently but 8GB is too little for power users. Upgrading to a 16GB Unified memory will extend the life of the computer and usually add $100 – $150 to the price. This should be the most important item to upgrade prior to storage.

Storage tiers: Most entry models come with 256 GB of storage and upgrading to either 512 GB or 1 TB prevents the need for an external hard drive. Expect to get/pay an additional $80 – $120 for each storage tier increase.

Battery health & cycle count: This can be found by going to the System Settings > Battery > Battery Health. A battery health over 85% is in great condition. The price can typically be negotiated down by about $150 – $200 if the battery health is below 80% or the cycle count is >500.

The 4-Point Inspection Checklist

  • Physical Inspection: Look for anti-glare coating scratches or keyboard impressions when inspecting the screen. Look closely at the corners of the unit for dents or scratches from drops that may indicate a loose connection internally.
  • Apple Diagnostics: The diagnostics function will then scan your hardware components to look for hidden defects via the internal diagnostics system.
  • Display Testing: Put a completely black image and then, put a completely white image onto display. Look for particular pixels that are not functional or showing backlighting bleeding through, or colors appearing differently on one side of the screen than the other.
  • Hardware & Port Testing: Insert your USB-C hub into all of the ports on the unit. Make sure that your USB-C hub provides power delivery as well and that it transfers data from each port. Make sure to test each of the keys on the keyboard and make sure that the trackpad has proper click force; also, ensure that the video camera and microphone are also properly functioning.
